What
you should know before class
Namaste -
I honor the light within you
Jai Bhagwan
- I acknowledge the Divine within each one of us
Always listen
to your body and move at your own pace. If you feel uncomfortable
at any time during the practice feel free drop out of any of
the poses or exercises.
Breathe smoothly
and continuously as you move and stretch.
Do not hold
your breath or strain to attain any position.
Work gently,
respecting your body’s abilities and limits.
Please let
me know if you are under a doctor’s care of if you have
any specific health conditions, such as high or low blood pressure,
back problems, sinus troubles, or recent major surgery. I will
then be able to give you special guidance. If you are pregnant,
you should check with your health care provider before entering
into any exercising program including yoga.
Mats and
basic props will be provided but feel free to bring your own
if you like. Your own eye-bag is always delightful during relaxation.
It is suggested
that you practice several times a week or daily if possible
to receive the maximum benefit of yoga but coming to class just
once a week can have a positive effect on your body, mind, and
spirit.
Be sure to
ask questions during class about anything that is unclear to
you. I would be happy to speak to you privately after class
in person or over the phone or communicate via email. Private
lessons are available.
Regular attendance
is highly recommended. Please try to arrive a few minutes early
so you have time to relax before class begins. If you attend
class once a week try to stretch out a few times in between
classes.
When you
enter the classroom, leave your worldly cares and troubles outside
the door. Allow yourself to enter into the experience of being
in the “here and now” and by doing so you will automatically
let go of the regrets of the past and the anticipation of the
future.
It is best
to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Wait at least two hours
after a full meal before practicing. If you need a small snack
before class, drink a glass of juice along with some nuts or
fruit. Bring drinking water to class and be sure to drink plenty
of water following any exercise program including yoga.
Everyone
can benefit from yoga regardless of your age, flexibility, or
degree of proficiency in the exercises. I will be happy to offer
assistance in whatever way possible.

Thanks
for visiting my website! I am a Certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher
as well as an Associate Broker with Town
and Country Real Estate on the beautiful island of St. John,
USVI. I began practicing yoga while I was pregnant with my son
in 1998. After natural childbirth and a quick recovery, yoga
became an essential part of my life. As my practice expanded
I decided to pursue a formal teacher training and in August
of 2003 I graduated from Kripalu Yoga 200 hour Basic Teacher
Certification. I host a variety of classes and I hope to see
you on the mat! Private lessons are available for individuals
and small or large groups. Practice yoga in the privacy of your
rental villa, private home, or we can even take it to the beach.
I'm Fully Licensed and Insured.
A little bit more
about Lori and St. John ………………
I
moved to the lovely little island of St. John, in October 1992
after being introduced to the island six months earlier by family
friends. I would often baby sit their little girl and they invited
me to visit the island with them during their yearly pilgrimage.
I, too, quickly fell in love with the island.
My
son and I love to play on the different beaches and see the
Virgin Islands
National Park. The Park beaches, historic ruins, and the
many different hiking trails are the main attraction of St.
John and encompass 2/3 of the island. Show your support for
the park by visiting
Friends of the National Park website.
A
few days a week you can find me at the Mongoose Junction office
in Cruz Bay across from the Sun Dog Cafe or at our Coral Bay
office of Town
and Country Real Estate next to Windspree
Rentals, K2 Video and above C4th. While you're in the area
of Coral Bay take a walk across the road and visit Jolly

Breathing Basics
The
practice of conscious yoga breathing is called "Pranayama".
It is the Sanskrit word meaning "restrain or master the
life force". "Prana" is the life force energy
and "ayama" is lengthening or restraining. When you
become conscious of your breath it becomes prana and when you
practice different breathing techniques you are able to use
this prana, this life force, to relax nervous tension and sharpen
mental awareness. Pranayama has a mysterious power to revitalize
and soothe a tired body, calm a wild mind, and uplift a flagging
spirit. Yoga poses will develop the body but pranayama will
develop the mind.
Minding
the breath is central to the practice of yoga. Throughout your
yoga practice it is essential to breathe smoothly and continuously
as you move and stretch. Allow yourself to move with the breath.
Never hold your breath or strain to attain any position.
Dirgha
Pranayama is the foundation of all yoga breathing techniques.
It is known as The Complete Breath, The Three Part Breath, or
Full Yogic Breathing. It may be practiced at anytime but is
especially effective while holding yoga postures. This is what
it means to "breathe into the pose". It is this same
breath that may be used during relaxation and meditation. The
following exercise is helpful in understanding this technique.
Take
a Breathing Break - Dirgha Pranayama
Read all of the instructions before you begin. Do not do this
exercise if you have any respiratory infections or if you are
experiencing any irritation of the throat or sinuses.
Breathe
slowly and deeply through your nose while sitting in a comfortable
cross-legged position or while lying down. If you choose to
sit, sit on the edge of a small pillow or folded blanket to
make it easier to hold and keep your back straight. Place your
hands on your abdomen and take a deep breath through the nose
into the lower lungs allowing your belly to float forward on
your slow full inhale. Then exhale slowly and completely through
the nose. Repeat as needed to get a feel for this sensation.
Place your hands to the sides of the ribcage and breathe into
your chest feeling your rib cage expand to the sides. Exhale
slowly and completely. Then repeat the full deep yogic breathing
with your fingertips on your upper chest allowing the chest
to rise up on the inhalation. Then combine the three parts;
the belly, the rib cage, and upper chest. Envision filling your
lungs from bottom to top--first by expanding the abdomen, then
the middle rib cage, and finally the upper chest. When exhaling,
envision the breath emptying in reverse, from top to bottom,
pulling in the abdomen slightly at the end to empty the lungs
completely. Continue to focus your attention on the breath as
it enters and exits your body. Do this for as long as feels
comfortable. Discontinue if you feel any discomfort or if you
feel lightheaded or dizzy. Find a pace and rhythm that feels
right for you.
Studies
have shown that you can take in and give out seven times as
much air--that means seven times as much oxygen, seven times
as much prana--in a three-part deep breath than in a shallow
breath.
